After five years or so, we finally have a new album available. “Ephemeral” is a compilation of sorts; it contains material from the “Jacaranda” and “Blue Gardenia” sessions, along with a tune that predates “Jacaranda” (“Blues for Buddy Boy”, a sort of ‘prequel’ to “Blues for Iain”), and, a blues recorded with Barbara Reed. Mingus, Mingus

I saw the group Mingus Dynasty last night with our webmaster. Not sure what to expect, my expectations were medium, wrong again, the band was sensational.
Of course the charts are fantastic (as this is a band officially sanctioned by Sue Mingus, the late bassist’s widow), but the leadership provided by Alex Foster
(on alto and soprano sax) and bassist Boris Kozlov was superb. While all of the soloists were New York ‘A’ listers, we were particularly knocked out by pianist Dave Kikoski. I’ve read about him but to see him was remarkable. I highly recommend seeing this group if you have the opportunity to do so.
Here’s Seamus Blake (who also was burning last night with the band) on tenor sax with David Kikoski on piano, Bill Sweetheart on drums and Matt Clohesy on bass.

I was watching Austin City Limits the other night and I happened to see the Black Keys. I was not aware that they were a guitar/drum duo, a la The White Stripes. Very nice concept, simplicity. I was reminded of this:

Regarding Vincent Price

A couple of weeks ago, I got off of the 710 on a very crowded Friday afternoon. After considering my options (scream, cry), I recalled that the Vincent Price Art Museum had re-opened at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. I traveled down Avenida Cesar Chavez, and checked it out. This is a fantastic museum with beautiful galleries and multiple shows. The Round Trip show, featuring eight East LA college alums was very interesting indeed. Actually all of the show there were interesting; the Sonia Romero solo show was beautiful, as was the student show. My detour was well worth the time.
